gned city, so it s no
prise that it is full of people who
appreciate great design. Last year,
cultural organisation Cra ACT recognised
that there was no large-scale design event in the
capital to cater to this market, and facilitated
the rst ever DESIGN Canberra Festival.
In the 2015 the event will once again be held
across the city, promoting and advocating
for designers, artists and cra speople by
connecting them with members of the public
through a series of events and activities.
" e festival includes everything from
architecture and landscape design to jewellery,
fashion, sustainable design and the built
environment, and everything in between,"
DESIGN Canberra manager Adelin Chin
"It s a chance for audiences to come to
activities, events, tours and lectures to really
experience what designers do.
"We had overwhelming feedback that last
year audiences could not get to all the activities
they wanted to. So this year we re expanding the
festival to be held over nine days."
e expanded program will include some
of the popular events from last year s festival
as well as some exciting new additions. e
ACTivate program, in which vacant storefronts
in the Canberra CBD are lled with pop-up
exhibitions and activities, will be back again
and will be free and accessible to all members
of the public.
e Capital of Culture tours will also be
back, with more tours covering more locations
that showcase great design in action across
" en we have Living Artists, which is about
opening workshops, studios and businesses to
the public," Ms Chin says.
"For instance, a person who is interested in
seeing what an architect s o ce is like will be
able to go visit one. Or if they re interested in
seeing an artist s open studio and talking to the
artist and purchasing some work they can do
that as well."
Another highlight will be the Design Buzz
series, which will see guest speakers giving
lectures on a range of featured themes,
including collaboration, sustainable design and
how design a ects people s everyday lives.
" e intent is that we are appealing to the
general public; those who are just interested
in hearing interesting speakers on interesting
topics. So you don t necessarily have to have a
design background, you just have to have an
interest in how design can play a part in your
life," Ms Chin says.
"And there s so much fantastic design to be
uncovered in Canberra. We are a small city but
our creativity is huge."
Anyone interested in volunteering or
participating in the festival in encouraged to get
in touch with Cra ACT.
