United in spring
The captain of Canberra's women's national football
team, Ellie Brush, told MEREDITH CLISBY how she
plans to spend spring in the nation's capital.
How will you be spending spring in
I'm really looking for ward to spring in
Canberra, and not just because Canberra
United will start its second season in the
We s t fi eld W-League. After a cold winter,
it's great to have the sun come back and
it means I try and spend as much time
outside as possible. If not at McKellar
Park for Canberra United games, it will
be spending time in the ACT's parks,
shopping or dining out
al fresco style with family and friends.
When friends or family visit you in
Canberra where do you take them?
There's no better way to celebrate
spring in Canberra than to be outdoors
so I always take any visitors down to
the lake or up Mt. Ainslie and Black
Mountain Tower for the incredible views.
It wouldn't be a trip to Canberra in spring
without a visit to Floriade too.
What are the best places in Canberra to
experience spring days?
Other than sitting on the hill at
McKellar Park cheering on Canberra
United during the spring, anywhere
around the lake is a beautiful spot to
experience a spring day. I love taking
a paddle boat out on the lake with
uninterrupted views of the city.
What do you think attracts new
residents to the national capital in the
The national capital is a wonderful
place to be in spring regardless of whether
you're visiting or living here. With plenty
of sunshine, the city has loads of outdoor
activities to help pass the time, whether

it is walks around the lake or through the
bush, visiting the museums and galleries
or having a kick at the local park. For
someone like me, who loves all sports, it's
also a great sporting city. Spring is a great
chance to catch all the finals for the local
What are your aims for the upcoming
W-League season -- both personally and
After making the grand final in
the inaugural season of the Westfield
W-League, we're hoping to go one
further this season by winning the
league. Personally, I'm hoping to have
a consistent year with the goal of being
selected for Australia at the end of the
season ahead of the Asian Cup, which
will be the qualifiers for the women's 2011
World Cup in Germany.
What should Canberra United fans look
out for this season?
Our fans can expect a very exciting and
entertaining brand of football with plenty
of goals. We are all really looking for ward
to playing in front of our wonderful
supporters and hopefully we can reward
their passion and loyalty with lots of wins.
For our first season last year we had great
support and we hope even more fans pack
into McKellar Park (and into Canberra
Stadium for one game this year) to see
what we can do in season two.
