"What we do is provide an opportunity
for the locals to come here on Friday or
Saturday night. People come out here, sit
on the balcony and have a chat and enjoy
themselves over a glass of wine or beer."
"What it has done for bringing the
community together has been fantastic,"
"We get people waving across the
restaurant and saying hello all the time,
which is lovely. That's exactly what we
Elke said the atmosphere was meant to
replicate an old English pub -- "relaxed, not
"You can come here for coffee and cake
and sit here for hours if you want."
Above all, the Davies want visitors
to enjoy themselves when they come to
"People can get too serious about wine,"
"As much as it is a serious drink, you can
still have a bit of fun."
Therefore, as a bit of fun, there are
reasons behind the names of all Shepherds
"They're either something to do with
the property, an interest of the family or a
person in the family."
The 'Sissy Moo' Shiraz was reminiscent
of Chris' childhood nickname, while 'The
Girls' Merlot was named after the grape
"The merlot vines somehow got
nicknamed 'the girls'. We always said,
'dad's going down to see the girls'. It's
a great marketing tool and I think it's a
talking point for people."
The Davies family promise there will be
a lot more fun, great food and wine during
the weekend of the Canberra District
Wine Harvest Festival.
"This will be our second wine festival.
We're going to have a band, a DJ, a grape
stomping competition and a wine barrel
The festival weekend, from April 10-
11, will showcase almost 30 Canberra
district wineries, guaranteeing plenty of
great activities to make the most of "all
