On May 21, the pinnacle of third-
birthday celebrations for the glassworks
was the launch of a public artwork. Atop
the gallery space that was once the old
smoke stack of the powerhouse that now
houses the glassworks, a 30-metre high
tower of glass sits, referencing the original
chimney that sat, once upon a time, on the
smoke stack. At night, it glows an electric
blue. The artwork Touching Lightly,
commissioned by the ACT government,
was fashioned by artist Warren Langley.
"I think it'll become one of the icons of
Canberra," Clare said.
This winter, visitors to the glassworks
can choose from a range of ways to explore
their neighbourhood glassworks. Clare's
proudest work, along with that of selected
artists will be displayed on plinths through
the studio as part of a special display
starting June 6.
While Clare and her team can be seen
working in the hotshop every Friday from
the obser vation deck above, on Saturdays
and Sundays she encourages those looking
for a real winter warm up to step into the
hotshop themselves by taking part in an
'Off The Street' experience.
"Under the super vision of two highly
experienced professionals, people can
literally come off the street and experience
the magic of working with molten glass."
