"What does your POSTURE say about you"
Your posture can signify a lot of things about
you ... from your general demeanour, your
attitude, confidence levels, the type of mood you
are in and even your level of health. When you
last looked at you posture in the mirror, what
was it telling you?
Many of us feeling or guilty about our posture. We remember being
told to "sit up straight!" or to "hold those shoulders back!" and these
nagging reminders from our well-meaning mothers often haunt us
as we are faced with rolled shoulders, hunched backs and wondering
why clothes never seem to sit straight on our bodies. Our family
photo album lays testimony to our uneven shoulders and a neck that
cranes so far forward, you think it would fall off at any time! But
what your mum didn't know was that by correcting your posture, she
may have been preventing a life of poor health!
Having said that, most of us still did not end up with the most
perfect posture, despite our own very best efforts and the constant
droning of our parents. The reason for this is simple. Life is fraught
with stresses and dangers! This means we become vulnerable to a
condition known as "vertebral subluxations" where the alignment of
the spine is altered and no amount of conscious effort can correct it!
But, there's something really important about these
Subluxations will not just create bad posture, but they can cause
severe impacts on your overall health. In fact, in recent scientific
studies, subluxations have been linked not only to back pain and
chronic headaches, but chronic fatigue syndrome, lowered immunity
levels, asthma, migraines, indigestion, constipation, irritable bowel
syndrome, menstrual and hormonal problems, colic, ear infections
and Parkinson's disease -- just name a few! How can these problems
be caused by misalignments in the spine?
Usually, when these misalignments occur, they place some pressure
or tension on the spinal cord and the delicate nerves as they exit the
spine to supply all of the tissues and organs of the body. As a result,
the normal messages coming from the brain are not able to get
through clearly and then a malfunction begins to occur in those cells.
This leads to disease and later on, we start to get the symptoms like
headaches, fatigue or worse!
But, there's more ...
Subluxations, by their nature, cause the spinal column to become
unstable, and if left undetected and uncorrected can cause the
spine to degenerate. This degeneration is often put down to "old
age" but in a severely subluxated spine, we have observed advanced
degeneration in 30-year-old men and women. On the other hand, we
have also observed many people in their 70s who have maintained
their spinal health throughout life and their spines have remained
completely free of any degeneration! It all comes down to having
correct alignment and not having an unstable spine that to battle
against gravity every day for 70 years! The great side-effect of this
is that you end up with great posture -- something you can be truly
"But I have no back pain, surely that means there is nothing wrong
with my spine and nervous system?"... I hear you ask. Well, that is
a tricky and dangerous part about subluxations. Only 10% of your
nervous system perceives pain, so subluxations often exist in the
body with no pain at all. They are in the spine wreaking havoc on
your nervous system, the master system of the body, causing your
spine to degenerate and you may have no idea that they are there ...
until it may be too late. If your spinal column degenerates too far,
it is not able to be corrected using simple but effective techniques,
and you may be a candidate for risky and painful surgery in later life
following years of debilitating pain and lack of flexibility.
So how do we get "subluxated"? ...
The most obvious cause is accidents -- slips, falls, car accidents and
even the birth process ... for both the mother and the baby. Less
obvious is the prolonged bad working positions, heavy lifting, poor
sleeping postures and taking on postures that reflect unresourceful
emotions such as depression or anger. So, to find out if you have
The most accurate way to determine if you have subluxations, how
bad they are and how much damage they have caused is to have a
full spinal examination by a health professional that specialises in
this area. As corrective chiropractors, our approach is to use digital
postural analysis; take a bilateral weight-scale reading (this tells us
how balanced your body is and from where other potential problems
like sore knees and hips may be originating); we take high-frequency
weight-bearing X-rays of your spine and our chiropractic doctor -- Dr
Andrew -- feel the spine for any areas of muscle tightness, spasm and
After carefully analysing your test results, Dr Andrew goes through
these with you and recommendations are given in the way of an
adjustment program -- using the latest technology in gentle and safe
adjusting techniques, important exercises and stretches to gently
retrain your spine back to stronger, more stable position. We are
constantly measuring your progress so that we can be assured that
things are improving for you and that the results obtained will be
long lasting -- not just a "patch up" job for the short term. "Patch-
ups" never work long term and certainly don't improve that all

hair and nails, breast augmentation and great skin if you look like
