Big Splash on gigantic slides
Fun is set to
TOWERING waterslides worth
$3.5 million from Queensland's
Wet'n'Wild are set for summer action
at the Big Splash water park in
The 85-metre long Twister and the
gigantic Speed Coaster, which
stretches beyond 100 metres, are
getting their finishing touches before a
much anticipated hot summer hits the
Big Splash owner Aaron Watkins
said the new slides would see a tripling
of their ride capacity.
''We were lucky to get these
slides,'' Mr Watkins said. ''These
rides here would be a $3.5 million
''We know the Wet'n'Wild people
very well and the people who put them
in so we had an arrangement.''
He said the immense size of the
Speed Coaster presented them with a
few logistical issues after they found it
was too big to fit in the park.
''We had a bit of a design problem
with one of them so that put us back
more than 12 months,'' Mr Watkins
said. ''So the construction of the slides
didn't start until July last year and it
has taken a bit over a year to get them
The Speed Coaster is a tandem tube
ride that begins at a height of more
than 20 metres above the ground.
''It will start behind the tower,'' Mr
Watkins said as he looked up at the
park's centerpiece slide that's crowned
with a dome-tent style roof. It's
actually higher than the tower. You
walk up a ramp carrying your tubes up
and mums and dads and the kids -- dads
in the back, kids in the front or vice
versa. It's a bit more interactivity with
parents and kids.''
Mr Watkins family has owned the
Big Splash park for more than 20 years
and he said last year's summer was the
worst they'd ever had.
With almost continuous cool wet
conditions allowing just a smattering
of above 30-degree days the park
experienced a drastic decline in visitor
''It's been tough over the last couple
of years with the summers,'' Mr
Watkins said. ''We were easily down
20 to 25 per cent. But with these new
rides we're hoping it will boost more
customers for us.''
He hopes the rides and coupled with
a scorching weather give them the
100,000 visitors they're aiming for this
The new Twister waterslide opens
this weekend while the Speed Coaster
is expected to open on either the first or
second weekend of December.
